WhatsApp Marketing for Restaurants: What Works and What Gets You Blocked
WhatsApp is where many guests, especially in the Gulf, actually read messages. That makes it a powerful channel for restaurants, and also an easy one to abuse. A guest who feels spammed on WhatsApp does not unsubscribe; they block you, and that guest is gone for good.
Start with real opt-in
Only message guests who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. On WowMenu, the marketing consent box starts unticked when guests order ahead, and consent shows on each guest's profile, so nobody messages a guest who said no.

WhatsApp also has its own business messaging rules for marketing messages, so make sure your setup follows them.
Messages that work
- A thank-you after the visit, with a small reason to return
- A win-back message when a regular goes quiet, with a single-use coupon
- A birthday treat, if the guest shared their date
- A seasonal message for Ramadan, Eid or a new menu, sent to the guests most likely to care
Keep each one short, personal and useful. One clear offer, one clear way to use it.
How often
Less than you think. A message after the visit and a few well-timed messages a year will do more than a weekly broadcast. Cap how many messages any guest can receive, and stop the sequence as soon as they return.
What gets you blocked
- Messaging people who never opted in
- Sending the same offer to everyone, every week
- Long messages with several offers
- No obvious way to stop receiving messages
Measure redemptions, not opens
Use single-use coupon codes in each message, so every redemption ties back to the message that earned it. Look at the bill on the return visit and whether the guest came back again without a prompt.

Each message is counted per channel and per recipient, with spending capped by default. See WhatsApp campaigns, win-back automation and how to win back lapsed guests.
