SMS, Social, Influencer or Print: How to Tell Which Channel Brings Guests In
Most restaurants promote in several places at once: a flyer at the till, an Instagram post, an influencer visit, a message to regulars. Then they look at the results and see one number. If every channel carries the same code, there is no way to tell which one brought guests in, and next month's budget is a guess.
The fix: one batch per channel
Give each channel its own batch of codes. A flyer gets its own code, the Instagram post another, each influencer their own, and messages to regulars a batch of single-use codes. Now every redemption tells you where it came from.
On WowMenu, a coupon campaign can have batches for flyers, social, influencers, SMS, email, partners and staff. Each batch is followed from sent to redeemed, and every code also works as a QR code and a personalised link, so a guest can scan or tap instead of typing.

What each channel is good at
There is no universally best channel. Each one does a different job:
- Print at the venue reaches guests who are already there. It is good for bringing them back, not for finding new ones.
- Social posts reach followers, many of whom already know you.
- Influencers can reach new guests, but results vary widely from one creator to the next. Give each one their own code.
- SMS, email and WhatsApp reach your own guests directly, and only those who agreed to hear from you. Single-use codes make each redemption exact.
- Partners (a nearby hotel or office) can send steady, local traffic.
- Staff codes reward your team for bringing friends and family in.
Compare channels fairly
Redemptions alone can mislead. A channel that brings in many guests on a deep discount may be worth less than one that brings fewer guests who spend more and come back. For each channel, look at:
- Redemptions
- The average bill on those visits
- Whether the guest returned later without a code
- What the channel cost, including discounts and message fees
Paid social without handing over your data
If you advertise on Meta, TikTok, Snapchat or Google, you can target people who already know you. WowMenu prepares hashed customer-list files for each platform that you upload yourself. There is no live connection to the ad platforms and no linked ad account.
Mistakes that break attribution
- One code for everything. The most common mistake, and it makes every other number meaningless.
- Codes that leak. A generous public code ends up on deal sites. Use single-use codes for messages and personal offers.
- No expiry. A code without an end date never prompts a visit.
- No cap. Set a redemption limit so a successful promotion cannot run away with your margin.
Make redeeming easy
However good the offer, guests will not fight for it. The code should go in at payment, and the discount should show straight away.
