The ROI of a Digital Menu: Where the Return Actually Comes From

When restaurants work out the return on a digital menu, they usually start with printing: no more reprints when a price changes. It is a real saving, and it is the smallest line in the sum. The return worth having comes from what guests order, how your team spends its time and how often guests come back.

The four places the return comes from

1. Printing and reprints. Easy to count, and usually modest.

2. What each table orders. A menu that recommends complete meals, offers the right add-on and shows how close an order is to a reward changes what each table spends. This is usually the largest line.

3. Staff time. Less time taking orders, re-keying them and walking to the pass, and more time looking after guests. It shows up as better service at busy times, not always as a lower wage bill.

4. Repeat visits. Loyalty, a remembered profile and win-back messages bring guests back, and each return visit is revenue you would otherwise have lost.

Estimate it with your own numbers

Use your figures, not someone else's. For each line, write down today's number and a cautious assumption:

  • Average bill per table, and covers per week
  • The share of tables ordering a dessert, a drink or a starter
  • Repeat visits per guest per month
  • Hours spent taking and keying orders at peak

A worked example, with figures that are only for illustration: 800 covers a week at an average spend of AED 120 per cover is AED 96,000 a week. If better recommendations and add-ons raised spend per cover by 5%, that would be AED 4,800 a week. Compare that with the plan price, from AED 290 a month on the Menu plan.

Check it after you launch

An estimate is only useful if you check it. Record a baseline of eight to twelve weeks before you start. Afterwards, compare like with like: the same days, dayparts and seasons.

Revenue Impact does this for you. It compares each week with your pre-launch baseline, labels each figure by its evidence and splits any change into Discover, Convert and Retain.

What a digital menu costs

Count the full cost: the monthly plan, the time to build and photograph the menu, and staff training. WowMenu plans start at AED 290 (ยฃ59 in the UK) a month, with a 30-day free trial and no commission on orders. See pricing.
